Tuolumne County has had the highest rate of prescribed opioids for over 6 years and opioid related deaths have increased more than 10 times since 2018. Illicit fentanyl surpassed prescriptions as the cause of opioid related overdoses in 2022.
Despite these grim statistics, prescription rates have improved and partnerships and efforts to prevent and treat addiction have increased with the goal to turn the tide and optimize outcomes.
